My father had Acrobat 9.3 and was trying to load 9.5. It got about 90% through and then ended up with error:
Error 1402. Could not open Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\IMAIL. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
He went to regedit and went to the above location and the permissions on the Optional Components and had the group “Everyone” with Allow checked for Full control and Read. On IMAIL nothing in group. When I tried to follow instructions for adding Administrators to the OptionalComponents, it gives an error “Registry Editor could not set owner on the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys.”. When I tried on the IMAIL, it said “Unable to set new owner on IMAIL. Access is denied.”
I wasn’t able to find any more info on what to do and I’m way out of my league even on the above instructions from the Acrobat website. When I try to uninstall Acrobat 9.3, I get this message: βThe installation source for this product is not available.β Since Windows Installer CleanUp Utility is no longer available I have to try many solutions in removing Acrobat 9.3 on Windows XP SP3 for him.
Uninstall Acrobat 9.3 On Windows XP

3. Select Add/Remove Programs
4. Select the Acrobat 9.3 you want to remove
5. Click Change/Remove
Uninstall Acrobat 9.3 On Windows Vista
1. Close all open Web browsers
2. From the Start menu in Windows, select Control Panel
3. Under the Programs icon, select Uninstall a program
4. Select the Acrobat 9.3 you want to remove
5. Click Uninstall and then Continue to remove Acrobat 9.3
In most cases, the two ways above should have successfully removed Acrobat 9.3. But once the built-in uninstaller is corrupted as stated in the beginning, you will need a professional program uninstaller to uninstall Acrobat 9.3 and any other unwanted programs like Stamps.com software removed. The program, such as Perfect Uninstaller, makes sure all the now-defunct registry entries and related files are eliminated automatically with a few clicks.
