norton-gobackMy mother has a 5 year old Dell that is running Windows XP with 512Ram. She has just uninstalled as it expired. This left Norton GoBack. She left it there thinking it is a good back-up. Today she gets a warning that Norton GoBack is 89% full. She had no idea what that meant, so I went to Add-Remove and tried to uninstall it. A screen came up showing %’s and slowly got to 49% and stopped. It stayed that way for hours and the computer froze. I went to Task Manager to end process and got a window telling me the machine Crashed because of uninstalling Norton Go-Back. The computer appeared as if in ‘safe mode.’ It asked me if I wanted to continue to uninstall Go Back, and I clicked “Yes’, but nothing happen. Just like my mother, many people have run into this problem before.

Common problems with GoBack
What Norton’s GoBack does is to take over the Master Boot Record (MBR) of Windows and creates its own restore points. As a result, if you want to uninstall Norton GoBack, the removal will erase all of the restore points you made with it. You must click the “Yes” button for this when uninstalling the program. Otherwise, if you have uninstalled Norton GoBack and the hard drive will be unrecognizable with the following message: “Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM”.

If all goes well with the built-in uninstaller of Norton GoBack, you will not get a popup error message. However, if GoBack is corrupted or damaged, you might get a message that reads: “Norton GoBack (141). Norton GoBack needs to reboot your computer because your system has become unstable. This could be caused by memory failures, unreliable hard disk transfers, or overclocking the CPU or other components.” If you get this message, it is most likely Symantec trying to work its way out of making bad software. If you don’t have a hardware problem, you probably have a corrupted version of GoBack.
